Deion Sanders Reveals Cancer Battle and Comeback Ahead of Colorado Fall Camp

After weeks of health-related concerns and limited public appearances, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders finally lifted the curtain on his health status during a high-profile press conference on July 28, 2025. Joined by his medical team—including representatives from CU Anschutz and UC Health—Sanders revealed that he had been diagnosed with aggressive bladder cancer and underwent surgery to remove his bladder. Thankfully, doctors declared him cancer-free after the procedure.

Sanders opened up about the emotional toll of the ordeal. He shared that he lost around 25 pounds, underwent bladder reconstruction using a section of his intestine, and has been adapting to life without a bladder. Humbling yet honest, he admitted to using a urostomy bag and joked about potentially having a portable toilet on the sidelines during games.

Earlier this offseason, Sanders hinted at the severity of his condition. In a video posted by his son Deion Jr. from May, he tearfully discussed having to prepare a will, not knowing whether he would survive. “Last night was tough … I had to make a will … to think that you may not be here,” he said at the time.

Despite the seriousness of his diagnosis, Coach Prime assured fans that he is back in full control and ready for the season. “I’m 100% back,” he stated with conviction. He also kept the diagnosis private from his sons to protect their focus, telling them it was a foot injury instead. His daughters were aware and provided support throughout his recovery.

Sanders appeared at Big 12 Media Days on July 9 and later visited training camps in Florida and Texas, where he posted on social media: “Back and feeling great!” His return to Boulder and leadership at fall camp marks the start of his third Colorado season, even as the Buffaloes face the task of replacing standout players like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders—both now in the NFL.

The coach’s resilience and transparency earned overwhelming praise from players, staff, and fans. His medical team highlighted his mental strength and unwavering faith, saying, “He never folded. He never wavered.”

As the upcoming season approaches with the opener against Georgia Tech on August 29, all eyes are on Coach Prime. His candid revelations and comeback reinforce his legacy not just as a charismatic leader but also a fighter—on and off the field. For many, his message is clear: vulnerability is strength, and battles fought in silence can become victories told out loud.
